KEYNOTE SPEECH
It's the job of the next generation of curators to see how performance works will be presented. – as acclaimed South African-born art historian RoseLee Goldberg puts it. And to continue Goldberg's claim: How might today's generation of curators present performance works from the southern hemisphere, respectively Africa?
CURATORIAL WORKSHOPS
As part of the effort to stimulate curatorial practice in South Africa, VANSA Westerncape in Cape Town is pleased to host curatorial workshops for young cultural producers. The curatorial workshops have been designed for early to mid-career visual-arts professionals working in South Africa. The project is specifically aimed at those who are interested in investigating the theory and practice of critical curating.

CURATOR
In the context of global discourses of the present, proximity may be understood at most as a “relational category”. Subjects constantly negotiate closeness, since the latter always also includes distance. In addition to today’s information technologies, video art or performance art in particular are considered as artistic procedures that are seemingly able to overcome distance. But how do closeness and distance unfold in the present beyond spatial categories?

PUBLIC TALK
Curatorship as a profession still is a relatively new specialization in the art world. But along with the increasing professionalization, the profile of the curator might not only define its resulting tasks, but also new hierarchies. While some curators seem to be aware of their powerful role and formulate a critical position within institutions, some curators still seem to reinforce a curator-as-superstar system. In this context, one might want to ask - what are the tasks of a curator?
Panelists: Riason Naidoo, Kathryn Smith and Claudia Marion Stemberger
CARTE BLANCHE
During my research project as curator-in-residence at the Bag Factory Artists' Studios in Johannesburg I investigate and present various forms of collaborative curatorship. As collective collaborations question hierarchies I offered FOTOGALERIE WIEN (Vienna, Austria) a 'Carte Blanche' for a video screening with artists that live in Austria. They work in a curatorial collective (artists and art historians) ever since their beginnings.

CURATOR-IN-RESIDENCE
The project Beyond Ethnic Marketing: Transcultural Strategies of Collaborative Curating aims to investigate and contextualise today's transcultural curatorial theories and tactics:
The objective is to develop a participatory platform in Johannesburg, South Africa that should scrutinize models of transcontinental curatorial discourses and collaborative curatorial practices that are equally informed of academic and artistic concepts.
