CURATORIAL WORKSHOPS

Critical Curating

Bag Factory Artists' Studios, Johannesburg, South Africa
January 28-30 2011

About the curatorial workshops

As part of the effort to stimulate curatorial practice in South Africa the Bag Factory Artists' Studios in Johannesburg were pleased to host curatorial workshops for young cultural producers. The workshop has been conceptualised and facilitated by art historian Claudia Marion Stemberger.
The curatorial workshops have been designed for early to mid-career visual-arts professionals working in South Africa. The project was specifically aimed at those who are interested in investigating the theory and practice of critical curating. Discussions and presentations were held to challenge and debate the nature of curating and consider the role of curators in South Africa and abroad. The participants engaged with various modes of curatorial practice and had the opportunity to present their own curatorial proposals for comment, while interacting with established professional curators from South Africa.
Participants were also be supplied with a selection of essays of curatorial studies and related documents to be read before the workshops commence. Where necessary participants were supported with lodging and transport between the place of residence and the workshop
